I have a side gig doing some pest management work for some of our local property owners, controlling pests
like rabbits, foxes, feral cats and wild dogs. Whilst my main tool of trade utilises Thermal scope technology, the use of a powerful light is also part of the kit, which is all done on foot.
Weight, manoeuvrability and bulk are all factors I must consider.
Not long after I purchased my Javelin Turbo I was in conversation with one of the property owners, who is a real hands on guy who loves making things and tinkering. He was showing me his recently modified spotlight rig,
which is a roof mounted spotlight (Powabeam I think) with a handle and a portable battery pack. He made the Battery pack up using 18v Makita drill batteries. It was a pretty smart set up and he was very happy with his efforts and wanted to give me a demo.
So next time I was up at his place doing my duties I let him know I was there and we went out to one of the back paddock layouts. This area allows line of sight across two 300m long paddocks, so from where we were to the start of some bushland was 600m.
He fired up his spotlight and he did some scanning of the paddocks. It wasn't too bad and it did give a good throw out to the end of the first 300m paddock, and it would be possible to use the light to take a shot out to 200m without too much fuss. He was obviously happy with his kit and the lighter weight setup he developed, allowing him the possibility to spotlight on foot. I was asked my thoughts and politely acknowledged his work and efforts. He then asked about my choice for light use, knowing that I do primarily use thermal, but there is still place for traditional lights. I advised him I “just” use a torch and pulled out the Javelin Turbo. He was a little shocked and asked if it could do the job.
I chuckled and said what do you think, turning the Turbo on and shining it down the paddock.
“Holy S***” was the response! Easily lighting up the back paddock and making the front paddock look like daylight he was simply blown away.
He now has Olights details……..
